Barnes Rugby Minis, Juniors & Colts - the youth section of Barnes RFC, a thriving and successful rugby club in south west London.
We welcome players at all levels to play rugby, from Under 5s to Colts (U17,U18). The younger players play tag rugby, with a progression to full contact rugby starting at the Under 9 age group, and transition from youth rugby teams to adult rugby after Colts, including an under 22s team. We have over 700 youth players, including very successful girls teams, currently up to U16.
We enthusiastically subscribe to the RFU youth rugby values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship (TREDS) and look to provide an inclusive and fun environment along with excellent coaching and skills development, plus enjoyment of competition as the players approach their teenage years. Our junior teams are competitive across the Surrey leagues and we have great participation with over 150 volunteer coaches, many with coaching qualifications, as well as first aiders and other helpers, and assisted by professionals. End of season tours are a highlight of the season for many; tours, holiday camps and social events are a key part of our culture.
We are part of Barnes Rugby Football Club, a community club in SW London. Our Mens 1st XV plays in National League Two (East). The adult section fields five mens teams and two womens teams. Barnes RFC has a long history, directly connected the birth of both the Football Association and the foundations of Rugby Union. There is a documented game between Barnes and Richmond on December 19th 1863, which took place in the grounds of the mansion that once stood at Barn Elms, where we play today. The Barnes Club name has changed back and forth over the years, with matches played at several grounds. It was establisheed as The Harrodian RFC with Surrey RFU and the England RFU for the start of 1912/13 season. The Club has played at its present Barn Elms home since the 1990s. Our Women’s section was established in 2004, it is now a thriving section with the 1st XV playing in the Women’s Championship. The Minis section was first established in 2008 with a small group of players up to under 10s, and has since grown to one of the largest youth rugby clubs in the region.
We foster a strong “One Club” approach with support between the age groups and close ties with the senior sections of the Club, all helped by enjoyment of our welcoming Clubhouse – and no doubt the regular free hot dogs and lunches in the clubhouse after training and competitive fixtures!
